Seamless Gutters in Austin: What the Price Per Foot Buys
Three quotes for seamless gutters on the same house in Round Rock: $1,900, $2,400 and $2,800. Same footage, same color. The homeowner assumes the low one is the deal and the high one is padding. Usually it's neither. The difference is in five things that don't show up on a one-line quote.
What "per foot" includes, and what it doesn't
Seamless aluminum in Austin runs about $9–$15 per linear foot installed. That number is supposed to cover the gutter, the corners, the end caps, the hangers, the downspouts, the labor, and taking the old system away. Whether it actually does depends on the crew. Here's what moves it.
1. Gauge
Aluminum gutter coil comes in .027 and .032 inch. The thin stuff is what most builder gutters were, and it dents when a ladder leans on it, sags between hangers, and oil-cans in the summer heat. .032 is about 20% heavier, holds its shape, and costs maybe $1 a foot more in material. A quote that doesn't state the gauge is .027. Ask.
2. Hangers
Spike-and-ferrule: a long nail through the front of the gutter into the fascia. Cheap, fast, and the reason 1990s gutters in Milwood and Buttercup Creek sag; the spike works loose as the fascia dries and splits. Hidden hangers: a bracket inside the gutter, screwed into the rafter tail, every 24 inches (18 on runs carrying a lot of roof). They cost more per foot in labor and about $1.50 each in parts. A quote at $9 a foot with hidden hangers every two feet is thin on something else.
3. Downspouts
2x3 is the builder size. 3x4 carries roughly twice the water and costs about $40 more per downspout. In Austin, where a May storm can run three inches an hour, 3x4 should be standard, and so should a downspout at least every 35 feet. A low quote often has one 2x3 at the end of each run, which is exactly the setup that overflows at the far corner. Count the downspouts on each quote.
4. Corners
Every inside and outside corner is a miter that has to be cut, fitted and sealed. A simple gable house has four. A hip roof in Steiner Ranch or Avery Ranch can have twelve. Corners are the most labor-intensive part of the job and the most common leak point later, so a crew that does them properly, with a strip miter and polyurethane sealant rather than a caulked box miter, charges for the time.
5. Fascia and tear-off
Old gutters have to come down and go somewhere; haul-away should be in the price. Fascia behind an old gutter is soft at one or two corners on most 20-year-old homes, and it has to be replaced before new hangers go in. A good quote checks the fascia from a ladder and lists it per foot ($8–$20). A driveway quote finds it on install day and either hangs the gutter on rot or hands you a surprise.

The $800 difference buys a system that holds pitch, doesn't overflow in a burst, and isn't hanging on soft wood. The budget version is, item for item, the set of gutters you're replacing.
Two things that legitimately raise a fair quote
Six-inch gutters. About 20% more per foot. Worth it on two-story homes, metal roofs and any run under a valley. If one quote is 6-inch and the others are 5-inch, they aren't comparable.
Steep lots and metal roofs. A house in Westlake that's three stories on the downhill side takes longer to set up. A standing-seam roof needs the gutter hung lower and forward with fascia-mounted hangers. Both are real labor, and a quote that ignores them is a quote that'll change.
How to compare quotes
Ask each contractor for the same six things in writing: gauge, hanger type and spacing, downspout size and count, corner method, fascia per foot, and whether tear-off and extensions are included. Put them side by side. Most of the time the "expensive" quote turns out to be the honest one, and the cheap one is missing two downspouts and the fascia.
